People with the StrengthsFinder theme of Input love collecting – this could be items of interest, resources, knowledge or all three. They love and crave to learn new and specific things and to share their knowledge and resources with others. Good question askers, people with Input are filled with curiosity and are excited about travel and learning about other cultures. They can also memorise easily and have incredible information recall.

Vicki Haverson, The Strengths Box

We interviewed Vicki, a qualified strengths coach, who has Input ® as her #3 talent theme and this is how she defines Input.

According to the Clifton StrengthsFinder ® profiling tool someone who has the talent theme Input ® is described as a person who has a craving to know more. They gather, collect and store information to call on whenever needed.

Input is a strategic thinking theme, one of the four domains recognised within the tool.

As strengths coaches and strengths advocates, we too have a hunger for more information relating to all 34 talent themes. How do we learn about all of them?

If you happen to have Input ® in your top 5 this theme will resonate with you. If not, perhaps you know someone who has this theme and you just want to know more about them.

Understand Input ® can be seen as a sponge, consistently absorbing information. Yet also recognized as a hoarder or packrat and may be seen as collecting too much. To outsiders, what’s

bookscollected may appear irrelevant or useless. You will need space to store your resources, there will be clutter. Your Dropbox, cloud or storage facilities will be full, including your garage.

Is this always respected?

Would this inspire people around you to see how much you hang onto things and information, will they see the value. Do they know to come to you to ask where items or information may be stored? You will know, you love to provide help, especially when someone is looking for something.

Let’s feed Input ® and look at the talent theme and its history.

Gallup, Inc ® and Don Clifton joined forces to understand and collect data on human behavior. Clifton, a psychologist, recognized that we tend to target weakness rather than focus on strength. Together they studied every industry imaginable and researched the most successful people within each industry.

The results they found were these consistent patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior. 34 in all, which they labeled – Talents. Through this data and research, they reverse engineered the Clifton StrengthsFinder ® profiling tool, which enables us to identify these talents within ourselves.

Yes, we all have these talents, one of which is Input ®. By completing the online assessment we are given the choice to either unlock our top 5 or open up all 34. Someone with Input may be inclined to unlock all 34, however, as coaches we recommend simply looking at your top 5 first. Remembering, if society has conditioned us to address our flaws, chances are we may spend too much time on our lower talents, this is why we want to focus on your top 5.

You then have the ability to apply skills and knowledge to these talents to develop them into mature strengths.

Input asks, “How do we do that?”

We learn, we read, we watch and listen. There are books, YouTube Clips, websites, courses and strengths coaches. We have made it easier for you, we went and interviewed strengths coaches around the world who have each particular talent in their own top 5 so we can learn from them.

Understand, we can learn all the theory, strategy, and understanding of each of the 34 talent themes, however, we will never truly know how it feels to have all 34 talents themes in our top 5. So why not learn from the best, who actually have that talent themselves?

You see, Input is a strength, whether it’s in your top 5 or in someone you know. It simply needs to be understood, accepted and harnessed. Just like all 34 talents. They are all equal, they are not labels, we’re all different. The chances of two people having the same top 5 talents in the same order are 1:33 million, so differences are great. We simply need to learn how to form strengths in partnerships.

Considering we interviewed coaches who have each talent in their top 5, we decided to produce little manuals or companion guides as we like to call them. Added to the interview, we’ve collected further information on Why you need to learn more about Input, Vicki will explain How you can implement the talent into your life. And this little guide will give you strategies, questions, and tasks for you to develop this talent into a strength. We published Focus on your Input Talent on 27th May 2017 and is available for you now, simply click on the image below.
