Sharpen Focus: How I Learned to Direct My Energy

Join me as I reflect on my journey through the Be More Social Challenge and how to sharpen my focus and transform my daily life.

Where Should We Put Our Energy?

As I moved through the Be More Social Daily Challenge this week, I found myself really tuning into Friday’s theme: Sharpen Focus. Honestly, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Like many of you, I often feel like there’s never enough time in the day. The internet, work notifications, social media—they all compete for my attention. I realized I was constantly scattering my energy, leaving me drained and disconnected from the people and things that truly matter.

This challenge encouraged me to stop and ask: Where should I put my energy? The simple answer? Into the present moment—into my family, friends, colleagues, and especially into reconnecting with myself. I noticed how easy it is to let distractions seep into our routines. A quick glance at my phone would turn into an hour of mindless scrolling. A “five-minute break” would leave me feeling more scattered than rested.

But when I chose to sharpen my focus, I began noticing opportunities I’d been missing. Instead of zoning out or multitasking during conversations, I started really listening. I greeted people more intentionally. I said good day with meaning, and that small act created a ripple effect of connection and warmth.

Distractions That Steal Our Focus

Distractions are everywhere, and often they come disguised as “productivity” or “necessary tasks.” For me, the biggest culprits included:

  • Endless social media scrolling
  • Checking work emails outside office hours
  • Background noise from constant news or videos
  • Messy physical spaces that overwhelmed my mind

I discovered that focus isn’t just about removing distractions—it’s about choosing what to focus on. That messy room I kept noticing? I could either stress over the mess or focus on creating a clean, peaceful space. It’s funny how shifting your perspective can shift your reality. When I focused on being a person who enjoys a clean room, tidying up became less of a chore and more of a natural habit.

Aligning Focus with Strengths and Routines

One strength I’ve always leaned on is self-awareness. This week, I used that strength to observe my habits without judgment. I asked myself: Am I focusing on what I want to create, or on what I want to avoid? It’s a subtle shift, but a powerful one.

For example:

  • Instead of worrying about having a dirty room, I focused on cultivating a clean, inviting space.
  • Rather than stressing over being “too busy,” I focused on carving out quiet moments for myself and loved ones.
  • I embrace routines that support clarity—starting the day with a deep breath and a clear intention, rather than immediately checking my phone.

Sharpening my focus also helped me see the value in seemingly small actions. Saying good day, making eye contact, or simply listening with my full attention became powerful ways to be more social and connected.

The Magic of Awareness + Sharpen Focus

Through this challenge, I started to see that awareness and focus go hand-in-hand. First, we cultivate awareness (where am I right now? what am I noticing?), and then we sharpen focus (where do I want to direct my energy?).

I loved how the practice built on itself:

  • Monday: Clarify purpose—Why am I doing this? What matters most?
  • Tuesday: Strengthen habits—What small daily actions support my purpose?
  • Wednesday: Elevate language—How can I speak and think in ways that reflect my goals?
  • Thursday: Cultivate awareness—What’s really happening in my environment and within me?
  • Friday: Sharpen Focus—Now that I’m aware, where do I want to channel my energy?

It all fits together beautifully—like layers of learning that support intentional living and personal growth.

Practical Tips to Sharpen Focus

Here’s what worked for me this week. Maybe it’ll inspire you, too:

  • Start with one intention each morning. Keep it simple. Mine was: Be present in each conversation.
  • Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” for blocks of time. I chose 10-minute windows to begin with—just enough to notice a difference.
  • Tidy one small area. Don’t overwhelm yourself. I started with my desk, and the clarity it brought spilled over into the rest of my day.
  • Say “good day” and really mean it. Whether it was to a neighbor, a colleague, or someone online, this simple practice helped me reconnect.

A Fun Challenge: Listen With Your Eyes

One playful exercise from the challenge really stuck with me: Try listening with your eyes. It sounds silly at first, but it’s a wonderful way to sharpen focus. I muted a video and watched the speaker’s body language. I noticed so much more than I would have otherwise—the subtle movements, the expressions, the energy behind the words.

If you’re in a classroom or meeting, suggest it to your group. See what happens when you focus on body language rather than just words. You might be surprised at how much you learn!

Final Reflection

Sharpening my focus this week wasn’t just about avoiding distractions. It was about choosing to direct my energy toward what matters: connection, clarity, and presence. The Be More Social Challenge reminded me that small shifts in focus can create big changes in how we experience life.

I encourage you to give it a try. Start with 10 minutes a day. Set one clear intention. And don’t forget—simply say good day. You’ll be amazed at what opens up.
