Are you feeling like there’s never enough time in the day? Do you find yourself endlessly scrolling, struggling to switch off from work, social media, or a never-ending to-do list? I get it— I’ve been there too. To counter that, I took on the Be More Social Daily Challenge. In fact, just ten minutes a day are significantly dedicated to being intentional about connection— and clarifying purpose with family, friends, colleagues, and most importantly, with myself.
In today’s blog, I want to share my personal experience of clarifying purpose during this challenge. I’ll explore why this topic matters, how my values show up in this journey, and how you can join me in reclaiming what truly counts.
Why Clarifying Purpose Matters
For me, clarifying purpose isn’t just an exercise— it’s a lifeline. In a world where digital noise and constant notifications pull at our attention, taking time to pause and ask “Why am I doing what I’m doing?” can be transformational.
I remember a metaphor that resonates deeply: purpose is like the North Star. Without it, you drift, aimlessly caught in tides you didn’t choose. With it, even in the storm, you know where you’re headed.
During this challenge, I reconnected with an old friend, Jo, a strengths coach I admire. We hadn’t spoken in a while, yet our conversation reminded me of shared values— communication, strategy, and growth. It wasn’t just about catching up; it was about realigning with people who reflect the kind of person I want to be. Ultimately, that’s the power of clarifying purpose. It brings your true connections into sharper focus.
And here’s a powerful question that emerged during my reflection:
Clarifying Purpose: “What do I want to be remembered for— the posts I made, or the people I made time for?”
My Journey: From Digital Overload to Intentional Connection
To give you a better idea, let me take you through what this looked like for me. It started late one Sunday night— or maybe it was Monday morning (time zones blur when you work across continents). I had been chatting with Jo, someone who once shared four of my top five Gallup strengths. In many ways, our talk flowed effortlessly, a reminder of what real connection feels like.
But here’s the catch: to make that connection possible, I had to switch off Facebook, log off Zoom, and mute the distractions that usually eat up my evenings. Surprisingly, those 10 minutes of intentional focus recharged me more than an hour of passive scrolling ever could.
I noticed how much metal space opened up when I wasn’t chasing pings and alerts. As a result, that space gave me room to think futuristically again— something I realized I’d lost touch with.
I started seeing possibilities: how I could bring people together, how I might collaborate with Jo to bridge our network across Australia, the US, the Philippines, and beyond.
Strengths, Values, and Lessons
This challenge tapped into my core strengths:
Clarifying Purpose Using Communication
- In particular, I rediscovered the joy of meaningful conversation, not just surface-level interaction.
Clarifying Purpose Using Strategic Thinking
- More importantly, it wasn’t just about talking; it was about envisioning how to create more value through those connections.
Clarifying Purpose Using Activator Energy
- Instead of sitting with ideas, I took small steps. For instance, I sent the message. I scheduled the call. I made the space.
The biggest lesson? Purpose doesn’t clarify itself in noise. Instead, you have to make room for it.
How Can You Clarify Purpose Through This Challenge
Here’s what I invite you to try— it worked for me, and I believe it can work for you:
- First, set a timer for 10 minutes. Then, disconnect from all digital distractions.
- Reach out to one person. Someone who lifts you up, challenges you, or simply reminds you of who you are at your best.
- Journal about the interaction. What did you feel? What purpose did it serve?
- Ask yourself: How did this align with the life I want to lead?
Over time, these small daily actions create ripples. They clarify not just your relationships, but also your direction.
A Final Reflection: Seeing by Candlelight
One image stuck with me as I reflected on this experience. Imagine sitting in the dark, holding a candle. Gradually, the flicker of that light makes everything in the room clearer— but only if you stop to look. In the same way, clarifying the purpose is like that candle. When you pause and focus, even a small flame lights the way forward.
