Sharpen Focus: Align Your Energy and Life’s Distractions

From Awareness to Intention: My Journey into Sharpened Focus

Good day, good day, good day! It’s Danny here, and today I want to share what I learned on Sharpen Focus Friday, part of our ongoing “Be More Social” daily challenge. This week’s journey has been all about cultivating awareness—tuning in to how we’re living, thinking, and acting. But Friday pushed it further: it asked me to sharpen that awareness into intentional focus.

And let me tell you. I needed that challenge more than I realized.

The Autopilot Trap: When You’re Competent but Disconnected

Here’s something that hit me hard: I’ve been operating on autopilot more than I care to admit.

You know the feeling—you’re doing all the things, checking all the boxes, even doing them well… but not feeling it. It’s like unconscious competence has taken over. At first, that sounds like a good thing, right? But the truth is, it can make you drift through your days like a passenger in your own life.

I caught myself in that exact spot—getting things done, but not deeply present. Not fully engaged. That’s when I realized: I wasn’t just on autopilot. I was stuck in reactive mode, putting out fires instead of building forward.

Distractions: The Sneaky Thieves of Energy

Friday was chaotic in all the typical ways. Emails piled up, meetings ran over, and social media notifications never seemed to stop. And let’s be honest, by Friday your brain is already in weekend mode, right?

That day, I had finished a meeting with a lawyer as we tried to finalize paperwork for our charity’s .org status. We’d been working on it for weeks, but it felt like running in circles—one signature couldn’t happen until another approval, which needed yet another document. Classic chicken-and-egg.

I found myself deep in frustration, almost consumed by the inefficiency of it all. But then came the pause. The challenge. The shift. I asked myself:

“Is this where I want to place my energy?”

Focus Isn’t About Doing More—It’s About Doing What Matters

I love a good challenge. I do. But I had to remind myself—sharpening my focus wasn’t about pushing harder or piling on more tasks. It was about clarity. About aligning my actions with purpose.

I realized something big: I was spending too much time trying to control everything. We had hired new people to help carry the load, but instead of creating space, I had taken on more.

Not because they weren’t capable, but because I hadn’t truly let go.

Letting Go to Move Forward: Trust as a Focus Tool

One of my top strengths is communication—connecting ideas, people, and possibilities. But this time, the message was for me: Trust your team.

So I flipped the script.

Instead of writing a standard employee contract, I asked each team member to write their agreement— what they were willing to give and what they hoped to receive.

It wasn’t about demands. It was about declarations.

This one shift did more than free up my time. It brought alignment. Suddenly, our focus wasn’t scattered—it was shared.

Be. Do. Have. — A Simple Model with Powerful Results

All week, we had been revisiting the Be-Do-Have model:

  • Be the person who lives with intention.
  • Do the actions that support that identity.
  • Have the results that reflect your values.

Too often, we flip it— trying to do more so we can have more, hoping it’ll make us feel like more.

But when I focused on being a leader who trusts, empowers, and creates space, everything else started falling into place.

Noticing What Matters: From Autopilot to Ownership

That Friday morning, I walked into the workspace and really looked.

I noticed the new additions from the men’s shed—how our team had carefully arranged the items, how conversations were buzzing around a beautifully made jewelry box.

These weren’t just moments of productivity. They were signs of ownership. My team didn’t need micromanaging. They needed space to create, connect, and contribute.

And I needed to focus on guiding, not controlling.

Rituals That Sharpen Focus

To stay grounded in this mindset, I’ve added a few small but powerful rituals to my day:

  • Morning check-ins: I ask, “What’s the one thing that matters most today?”
  • Movement before meetings: A walk, some stretching—anything to get out of my head and into my body.
  • End-of-day reflections: I jot down what worked, what didn’t, and what I’m willing to release before tomorrow.

These rituals don’t take much time, but they clear the clutter and help me show up with intention.

Where Should You Place Your Energy?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, ask yourself:

  • Am I spending energy on clarity or confusion?
  • Am I building relationships or reacting to resistance?
  • Am I creating or trying to control?

Because real focus doesn’t shrink your world. It amplifies your impact.

When you sharpen your focus, you begin to:

  • See new opportunities.
  • Hear what people are saying.
  • Notice what truly energizes you.
  • Stop wasting effort on what doesn’t matter.

Reconnect and Recharge: Join the Challenge

That’s why this Be More Social challenge matters so much. Taking just 10 intentional minutes a day to recharge and connect with others and yourself isn’t just about being social. It’s about being present.

So if you haven’t joined yet, start today. Reflect on what you became aware of. Set your focus. Revisit your strengths and look for moments to use them on purpose.

Even a small shift can change everything.

Final Thoughts: Focus Shapes Your Reality

If I had to wrap up this week’s lesson in one sentence, it would be this:

You get what you focus on—so focus on what you want.

Let go of distractions. Trust your people. Lean into your strengths. And begin each day with clarity and purpose.

Because the clearer your focus, the greater your impact.

Let’s sharpen our focus. Let’s be more social. And let’s move forward—together.
