Choosing the Strategic Path

Strategists are ‘pattern whisperers’, naturally able to discern what is important in the “big picture” and what to do to get there.

Stephen Pellegrino, Strengths Coach

Choosing the strategic path can be simple for someone who has Strategic ™ as a top 5 strength. Strategic is one of 34 talent themes according to the Clifton StrengthsFinder ®. Gallup, Inc® and the StrengthsFinder ® define someone with this talent as a person who has the ability to find alternate ways to move forward.

If you have this talent you will have a speed to consider all possible options and choose the best option. You have to develop this talent to trust it and believe in it, for it can create procrastination when not used resourcefully. Think about the Indiana Jones movie, The Last Crusade when faced with the ‘leap of faith’, here’s the clip to jog your memory.

The path will always appear for those with high Strategic ™, can you see it, or do you simply need to sense it, believe it?

Focusing on talents and developing them into strengths gives us energy, it excites us. Someone high in Strategic ™ loves seeing the path that others cannot. If you know someone with this talent, trust is important, for you will want to learn (if not already) to trust this person to find a better way. Understand though, they may not always be able to articulate it.

Our talents are often so naturally ingrained in us, we sometimes fail to appreciate how others do not see what we see. If you have this talent, you may want to assume others cannot see the path as easily as you.

Imagine, how will you communicate this to them? Or if you know someone like this, how will you engage with them in a way that will allow them to articulate their vision of the path. Remembering, someone unaware of having this talent may have been labeled as someone always trying to come up with different ways, or better ways. Yet, if a different way or better way is not required or even asked for, how damaging can that be to a relationship? At work or even at home?

When we look at different talent themes according to the StrengthsFinder ®, we look for points of difference. This provides us with a path to better acceptance of others. For example, when we contrast the two themes of Strategic ™ and Focus ™ we can see that:

Strategic is constantly looking for different ways, better options, and alternate routes.

Focus is driven and energized by one purpose, one destination. They may not be looking for different paths.

As you can see, it’s important to have an understanding of your talents and the talents of those around you. If you have Strategic ™ as a talent you may enjoy knowing about all 34 talent themes as they will provide a source of knowledge and grow your peripheral vision and understanding of others. You will naturally use this talent to find better paths for others and grow and develop your relationships by accepting others for who they are.

Our strategy to learn more about each talent was to interview over 30 strengths coaches around the world. Specifically asking questions about one of their top 5 talents. We had the honour of interviewing Stephen Pellegrino about his Strategic ™ Strength. We enjoyed it so much, we wrote a book on it.

We added to the interview and we collected further information on Why you need to learn more about Strategic ™, Stephen will explain How you can implement the talent into your life. And this little guide will give you strategies, questions and tasks for you to develop this talent into a strength. We launched Focus on your Strategic Talent on 27th May 2017 and it’s available to pre-order before publishing on 31st May, simply click on the image below.
